Propelling America’s SMBs Forward: Secure IoT Solutions for a Connected Future

The United States’ economic strength is deeply rooted in its small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs). With over 33.2 million SMBs accounting for 99.9% of all U.S. businesses ( (U.S. Small Business Administration, 2023), these enterprises form the cornerstone of our nation’s economic landscape. They drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute significantly to local communities across America.

These vital businesses face new challenges and opportunities as we progress through the Fourth Industrial Revolution. SMBs are rapidly adopting Internet of Things (IoT) technologies to stay competitive and enhance their operations. This shift is a trend and a necessity in today’s digital landscape. According to Cisco, SMBs are expected to account for nearly 40% of all IoT connections by 2024 (Cisco Annual Internet Report, 2020), highlighting the scale of this technological adoption.

The Promise and Peril of IoT for SMBs

IoT technologies offer SMBs unprecedented benefits, including real-time insights into their operations, improved productivity, and enhanced customer experiences. However, this digital transformation comes with hidden risks. Many of the IoT modules powering these advancements are manufactured in China. In fact, Chinese companies like Quectel and Fibocom now dominate the global market, capturing 53% of all cellular IoT module sales by volume outside of China in 2022 (Counterpoint Research, 2023).

This proliferation of Chinese-made cellular modules in IoT devices poses a significant risk to American security, privacy, and technological independence. These modules serve as gateways between IoT devices and the internet, potentially allowing unauthorized access to sensitive data or even remote disabling of critical systems.

A recent incident illustrates how easily this technology can be manipulated in the wrong hands. In 2022, when Russia stole $5 million worth of John Deere farm equipment from a Ukrainian dealership, the tractors were rendered inoperable thanks to their built-in connectivity modules. While the technology was used to thwart theft in this case, it demonstrates the power these small components hold. In less benevolent circumstances, similar modules could be used to disable critical infrastructure, disrupt supply chains, or compromise sensitive data. This example underscores the dual-edged nature of IoT technology and the paramount importance of ensuring these systems are secure and free from potential foreign manipulation.

Recognizing the Threat and Taking Action

The U.S. government is beginning to recognize this threat. The House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party recently expressed concerns about these Chinese-made modules to the FCC. The Department of Commerce has also proposed new rules to secure connected vehicle supply chains from foreign adversary threats (U.S. Department of Commerce, 2024).

Despite these growing concerns and the increasing need for secure IoT solutions, there’s a noticeable gap in the market for affordable options tailored specifically for SMBs. Few, if any, companies serve this crucial sector with solutions that protect their data from potential foreign adversaries while harnessing the power of IoT technology to propel American SMBs forward.

Bridging the Gap: Propel IoT’s Innovative Solution

This is where Propel IoT steps in, offering innovative and ahead-of-the-curve solutions designed specifically for SMBs’ unique needs. By providing an AI-powered intelligent platform for IoT, we’re equipping SMBs with capabilities previously available only to large enterprises.

Propel IoT delivers a powerful, AI-driven platform that combines smart hardware and software to revolutionize how businesses manage their IoT devices. We transform real-time data into actionable insights, enabling SMBs to optimize their operations in ways previously unimaginable. Our solution provides detailed visibility into fleet performance, automates critical reporting, offers geofencing capabilities, and delivers real-time alerts for everything from route deviations to tank level changes. By cutting through complexity and offering features like temperature monitoring, electronic logging, and asset tracking, we give SMBs the tools to compete and excel in today’s connected world. Whether it’s reducing idle time, improving driver safety, ensuring cargo security, or maintaining compliance, our platform empowers businesses to make data-driven decisions that significantly boost productivity and profits

We focus on three key asset management market segments within the SMB sector: supply chain and long-haul trucking, local & regional delivery (e.g., HVAC), and once critical equipment has been delivered to its ultimate destination, within a building, such as a warehouse or a hospital. Our solution not only helps businesses thrive in the digital age but also does so while safeguarding our nation’s interests and data sovereignty.

A Commitment to Security and American Prosperity

As the CEO of Propel IoT, I’m proud to say that we remain committed to providing secure IoT device management solutions that prioritize American businesses’ and citizens’ safety and privacy. Our platform not only helps SMBs harness the power of IoT but does so with a steadfast commitment to data security and sovereignty.

Together, we can harness the power of IoT technology to propel American SMBs forward, ensuring their prosperity and competitiveness in an increasingly connected world while maintaining the highest standards of security and data protection. The future of American small and mid-sized businesses is connected, secure, and bright, and Propel IoT is here to lead the way.
